India Forms 7 Empowered Committees on West Asia Crisis: Full Details

In response to escalating the West Asia crisis, the Government of India has formed the seven empowered committees. Committees look to manage its wide ranging impact on the economy, energy supplies and national security. They will be acting on directions from Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and members of this panels includes top bureaucrats and senior officials from key ministries. The move showcase the India’s urgent need to prepare for disruptions in oil supply, trade routes, inflation.

Why India Formed These Seven Empowered Panels

The current scenario and growing tensions in West Asia have raised the concerns over global energy supply disruptions along with the rising crude oil prices. Also the instability in critical shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz. India is being heavily dependent on the energy imports so prone to become vulnerable.

To address these risky systems the Centre has adopted a coordinated and multi-sectoral approach.

According to officials these panels will not only assess the immediate impact but also it will design short-term and long-term strategies to strengthen India’s  resilience for the future.

The formation of these panels highlights a proactive governance model in which real-time monitoring, rapid decision-making and inter-ministerial coordination are prioritized to avoid economic shock to the nation.

Panel 1: Defence, External Affairs and Public Order

  • The first and pillared strategic panel is led by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri with Home Secretary Govind Mohan and Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh as key members.
  • It is responsible for assessing geopolitical risks, internal security preparedness and diplomatic responses.
  • The role of this panel becomes important in scenarios involving evacuations, international coordination or escalation of conflict.
  • Along with Ensuring public order and national security readiness is a key focus of it because the global tensions spill over into regional or domestic challenges.

Panel 2: Economy, Finance and Supply Chains

Led Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Anuradha Thakur this will focuses on the economic fallout of the crisis.

The presence of the top officials from handling commerce, finance, labour, MSMEs and industry. Its responsibilities include monitoring,

  • Export-import disruptions
  • Supply chain bottlenecks
  • Financial market stability

Panel 3: Energy Security – Petroleum, LNG and Power

Energy is at the main focal point of this crisis. The third panel will be led by Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal who deals with oil, LNG, LPG and overall energy supplies.

It includes top bureaucrat’s from power, coal and mining ministries also along with heads of major PSUs like ONGC, IOC, and GAIL.

The panel’s main objective is to,

  • Ensure uninterrupted fuel supply
  • Manage price volatility
  • Strengthen strategic reserves

Panel 4 & 5: Agriculture, Fertiliser and Essential Commodities

The 4th panel focused on fertilizers and agriculture inputs Fertilisers Secretary Rajat Kumar Mishra will be the lead. As fertilizer production are depends heavily on energy inputs any disruption can affect crop yields and food security.

The fifth panel which is headed by Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare is tasked with ensuring price stability and availability of essential commodities.

Together, these panels are aim to control inflationary pressures and prevent shortages in essential goods.

Panel 6: Transport, Logistics and Trade Routes

Led by Ports Shipping and Waterways Secretary Vijay Kumar it will addresses disruptions in transport and logistics networks.

Also includes officials from aviation, railways and road transport sectors. The focus is on maintaining smooth movement of goods despite challenges in shipping routes, ports and aviation corridors and import-export logistics

This is so important as conflicts in West Asia can directly affect global maritime trade routes.

Panel 7: Information, Communication and Public Engagement

The seventh panel will be headed by Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju. The panel focuses on the public communication and information flow.

The role includes managing the accurate dissemination of information, countering misinformation and ensuring effective coordination between ministries and the public.

In times of the crisis clear communication will helps to maintain public confidence and prevents panic.

These empowered groups have been assigned a broad mandate to ensure India’s preparedness. Their core functions include are,
