Maharashtra has been hit particularly hard by the heatwave, with temperatures predicted to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next five days. During the past few days, more than 10 districts in the state have witnessed maximum daytime temperatures surpassing 40 degrees Celsius. Tragically, at least 11 people died due to sunstroke on Sunday after attending an event in Navi Mumbai. Reports suggest that lakhs of people attended the event in peak sun during the day, with around 125 individuals complaining of exhaustion and chest pain.
In West Bengal, heatwave conditions are expected to continue in some parts until April 19. According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are expected to occur in certain pockets of Gangetic West Bengal for the next 5 days and in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal for the next 3 days. Panagarh in Paschim Bardhanman recorded the highest temperature in the state on Sunday at 42.6 degrees Celsius, while Kolkata’s maximum temperature touched 39.8 degrees Celsius. From April 17, educational institutions in West Bengal will remain closed for a week or until further notice as announced by the state government.
In Odisha, despite a slight decrease in temperatures last week, the mercury level remained at or above 40 degrees Celsius in at least 20 places in the state on Sunday. With Jharsuguda recording the highest temperature at 43 degrees Celsius, the government has announced that classes in Anganwadi centers will be held from 7 am to 11 am due to the scorching heat. Boudh, Sambalpur, and Talcher also recorded temperatures around 42 degrees Celsius.
Bihar is also expected to experience heatwave conditions in isolated or some pockets over the next five days, with the Patna IMD issuing a yellow warning on Monday and Tuesday. Bihar Disaster Management Minister Shahnawaz has advised people to avoid heat exposure in the state and keep cool to avoid dehydration. The respective district authorities have been instructed to monitor the situation in their areas.
While Delhi-NCR has witnessed heatwave conditions for the past few days, the IMD has predicted relief with rainfall activity starting Tuesday. However, until then, the temperature in the national capital is expected to be above normal. An expert from the IMD has stated that there will be marginal heatwave conditions for the next two days in Delhi-NCR. A marginal heat wave is characterized by temperatures that exceed the normal range by 4.5-5 degrees Celsius.
