India’s Energy Transformation

Addressing the meeting, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, highlighted India’s remarkable progress in the energy sector over the past decade.

Key achievements include:

• India has become the world’s third-largest producer and consumer of electricity.
• Installed power capacity has reached nearly 540 GW.
• More than 50% of installed power capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources.
• Solar power capacity has increased from around 3 GW in 2014 to over 154 GW.
• The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is accelerating rooftop solar adoption across the country.

The Minister also highlighted India’s future goals of achieving:

• Over 400 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2032.
• 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
• 20% ethanol blending, achieved ahead of schedule.

Major Outcomes of India’s BRICS Chairship

Launch of BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence

A key outcome of the meeting was the launch of the BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence (DCoE) for Smart Grids and Energy Storage under the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform (ERCP).

The Centre will promote:

• Capacity building

• Technical cooperation among BRICS nations

Adoption of BRICS Guiding Principles
