India, Indonesia Seal BrahMos and Astra Missile Deals, Sign 14 Strategic Agreements

India and Indonesia have strengthened Comprehensive Strategic Partnership by signing 14 agreements in various areas such as defence, maritime security, trade, digital payments, education, space, and critical minerals. The agreements are believed to be of great importance since they were made known during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Jakarta on 7 July 2026. One notable aspect of this development is Indonesia’s intention to purchase India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles along with Astra Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (BVRAAMs).

What Happened PM Visit to Indonesia?

In connection with his three-nation tour of Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia met high-level bilateral discussions in Jakarta.

After the discussions, both countries confirmed that,

• They will provide BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to India
• They will ship Astra Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (BVRAAM) from India
• They have signed 14 bilateral treaties
• They will increase cooperation in the fields of defense, economy, technology, maritime security, education, and cultural exchanges

BrahMos and Astra Missile Agreements Reinforce Military Cooperation

The recently signed defence deals mark one of the important developments in India’s increasing defence exports.

BrahMos Missile Agreement

• According to the agreement, Indonesia will procure BrahMos supersonic cruise missile systems. Indonesia becomes the third country in South East Asia to have acquired BrahMos after Philippines and Vietnam.
• The BrahMos missile is a joint development of India and Russia, and one of the fastest operational supersonic cruise missiles.

Astra Missile Exportation

• The country has also decided to import Astra missile system from India.
• Astra is the Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missile (BVRAAM) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).
• The deal is worth over US 600 million.

14 Agreements Made in Areas Related to Strategy Matters

The agreements signed by India with Indonesia cover a wide range of areas, in addition to defence.

Enhancement of the Indo-Pacific Partnership

Both leaders have reiterated their commitment towards ensuring a free, open, inclusive and rule-based Indo-Pacific.

President Prabowo Subianto highlighted essential elements to be followed in this context,

• Peaceful maritime cooperation

Prime Minister Modi also ensured India’s support towards ASEAN Centrality emphasizing the close convergence of both countries with respect to their vision of Indo-Pacific.
