India Joins Global 6G Initiative With 25 Nations

India has become part of a multinational initiative that aims at guiding the development of 6G telecommunications infrastructure, which is part of India’s growing interest in digital technologies. Launched on September 7, 2026, the global initiative comprises the USA and 24 other countries, and is focused on security, competitiveness, and technology innovations. India’s joining of this global initiative is very important considering the fact that countries start laying down the technical and policy foundation of 6G, which is going to be the successor to 5G technology.

What is the Global 6G Initiative?

This multinational initiative has been formed with the goal of encouraging cooperation regarding the development of advanced wireless communications technology.

The 6th generation of mobile communication technology is expected to enhance the previous 5G in terms of data speed, latency reduction, and machine connectivity.

The global initiative is particularly concerned with forming secure, competitive and technologically future-proof networks.

India-US Technology Cooperation

India’s engagement took place through consultations between US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada.

Some of the topics of discussion included emerging areas of technology like artificial intelligence and data centers. They also discussed a possibility of US investments into India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 as part of technology and semiconductor cooperation between the two nations.

In this context, the Indian engagement with the 6G initiative can be seen as a continuation of the larger efforts in technology cooperation between India and the US.

G20 Innovation Ministers Meeting

It is also noteworthy that the development is tied with the G20 Innovation Ministers’ meeting, which took place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, from September 1 to 2, 2026.

The meeting was hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, while India was represented by Jitin Prasada and MeitY Joint Secretary Ajit Kumar.

The participating G20 ministers adopted the G20 Innovation Ministerial Statement on September 2. It acknowledges the importance of emerging technologies in boosting productivity and economic prosperity.

The Transition to 6G

The move from 5G to 6G will be about much more than fast mobile internet. Networks in the future might enable an array of interconnected devices and intelligent systems, digital applications that need to have low latency and high levels of reliability.
