India Launches GIRG to Strengthen Its Global Rankings and Performance

The Indian government has announced a major initiative to compare the country’s performance with 26 global indices. This effort aims to identify areas where India can improve and strengthen its position in international rankings. The announcement was made by Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, in Parliament on Monday.

Introduction to the GIRG Platform

This initiative is part of the Global Indices for Reforms and Growth (GIRG) platform. GIRG is designed to use international comparisons to guide policy changes, improve governance, and enhance India’s statistical and data-reporting systems.

Four Key Areas of Focus

The government will track 26 indices under GIRG across four main themes:

  • Economy – tracking India’s economic performance globally.
  • Development – monitoring social progress and human development indicators.
  • Governance – evaluating transparency, democracy, and rule of law.
  • Industry – analyzing industrial growth and competitiveness.

Each index will be monitored by a specific ministry responsible for checking data, reviewing methods, and making sure India’s latest official figures are used.

Central Coordination by NITI Aayog

The Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) at NITI Aayog will coordinate this effort. DMEO will ensure that data collection, analysis, and reporting are consistent and accurate across all indices.

Focus on Methodology and Data Accuracy

India already compiles key indicators such as GDP, CPI, and IIP using global standards. GIRG extends this practice to global rankings, where methodologies and data quality often vary. Ministries will review the methods used by international agencies and ensure India’s official data is correctly reflected.

Democracy Index Under Review

One notable index under review is the Democracy Index, previously criticized by Indian officials for lack of transparency and bias. India currently ranks 41st in this index, behind countries like Mauritius and Botswana, and is categorized as a “flawed democracy.” The Ministry of Law and Justice will examine the index methodology.

A Step Towards Better Global Standing

By closely monitoring these global indices, India aims to identify gaps, improve policies, and enhance its international reputation. This effort highlights the country’s commitment to using data-driven reforms to strengthen governance and economic growth.
