India Launches Nationwide Toll-Free Helpline for Census 2027 Assistance

India has taken important step towards the simplifying the Census 2027 process by launching the nationwide toll-free helpline. This newly operational number 1855 will help the citizens to understand and participate in the census more effective way. By offering the support in multiple languages the government has aims to ensure that the every individual regardless of  the region or background who can can contribute accurately to this important national exercise.

The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India has officially announced the toll-free helpline number 1855 and it is operational across all States and Union Territories.

This helpline is designed to,

  • Provide the guidance on house listing and Housing Census.
  • Will also assist the citizens in understanding census procedures.
  • It will offer the support in regional languages as well as English.

Census 2027 Begins In Digital era

For the first time the enumerators will use the smartphone based mobile applications instead of the traditional paperwork methods.

Two Phases of Census 2027

The census will be conducted in two the structured phases and also to ensure the comprehensive data collection.

Phase I: Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO)

This first phase will run from the April to September 2026. It will focuses on collecting data related to,

  • Availability of amenities
  • Household assets

Also the 15-day self-enumeration window will be provided before the enumerators begin their house visits.

Phase II: Population Enumeration

It is scheduled for the February 2027 and this phase will collect the detailed individual-level data such as the,

  • Migration patterns
  • Fertility details
