India Launches World’s First Franchise-Based Road Cycling League

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya has unveiled the official logo of the Cycling League of India (CLI). This will be the world’s first professional franchise based road cycling league. This initiative aims to promote cycling as a competitive sport in India. Also building a professional ecosystem that nurtures talent, attracts international participation and increases the country’s global sporting presence. The minister described the league as a “watershed moment for Indian cycling” in event.

What Is the Cycling League of India?

The Cycling League of India is designed as a franchise based professional cycling league, similar to other major sports leagues.

Key Features of the League

  • Eight city or region based franchises
  • Each team will have 10 cyclists

Teams will include,

  • 2 international cyclists
  • 2 junior cyclists
  • Remaining professional riders from India
  • Focus on building long-term cycling talent

The structure ensures both global competition and development of young Indian cyclists.

Competition Format of the Cycling League of India

The league will follow a structured competition format designed to keep races exciting and competitive.

  • Race Formats Included
  • Criterium races (short circuit road races)
  • Team time trials
  • Mass start races

The competition will take place in three stages, leading up to a grand finale.

These race formats are expected to make the league both strategically competitive and spectator-friendly.

Growing Popularity of Cycling in India

The new league builds on the recent growth of cycling events across India.

Key highlights of the Pune Grand Tour include,

  • 2.5 million spectators
  • ₹144 million public relations value
  • Recognition from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)

These developments show increasing global interest in India’s cycling events.

Fit India Movement Driving Cycling Culture

The Cycling League of India also builds upon the Fit India Movement, which promotes fitness and active lifestyles.

A major campaign under this initiative is Fit India Sundays on Cycle which was launched in the December 2024.

  • Participation of over 25 lakh citizens
  • Conducted in more than 2.5 lakh locations
  • Over 63 editions organized
  • Weekly participation exceeding 10 lakh citizens
