India-New Zealand Plan Major Sports Partnership as 100 Years of Sporting Ties Approach
India and New Zealand have initiated the discussions to expand bilateral sports cooperation as 2026. As the both country marks 100 years of sporting relations between the two countries. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya held a high-level meeting in New Delhi with a New Zealand sports delegation led by Chris Bishop, Associate Minister for Sport and Recreation. Thiss meeting focused on strengthening sports diplomacy and launch the India and New Zealand Centenary Sports Cooperation Programme 2026 to commemorate a century of sporting ties.
The discussions between India and New Zealand focused on launching the India-New Zealand Centenary Sports Cooperation Programme 2026. And this which will mark the historic milestone of 100 years of sporting engagement between the two countries.
The sport relationship dates back to 1926 when the Indian Army hockey team toured New Zealand. And that time it is marking one of the early sporting exchanges between the two nations. The centenary celebration aim to build on this legacy by introducing new collaborative initiatives in sports development.
The discussions on India-New Zealand sports cooperation were held during a ministerial meeting chaired by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
The New Zealand delegation was led by Chris Bishop who is the Associate Minister for Sport and Recreation. It also included Patrick John Rata, New Zealand High Commissioner to India, former international cricketer Ross Taylor and Raelene Castle, CEO of Sport New Zealand.
The Indian delegation included senior officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the Indian Olympic Association, and representatives from national sports federations.
During the meeting two countries identified several priority sports for collaboration under the expanding India-New Zealand sports cooperation framework.

These sports were selected due to the strong expertise of New Zealand in these disciplines and the growing interest in these sports within India.
As part of the India-New Zealand Centenary Sports Cooperation Programme 2026 both countries are also planning to organize several sports and cultural exchange initiatives.
One of the propose initiatives is the India-New Zealand Sports and Culture Week which will be hosted across cities in both countries.
The programme will bring together athletes, coaches and communities while celebrating the sporting traditions and cultural heritage of India and New Zealand.
These exchanges aim to enhance people to people engagement and deepen the sporting relationship between the two nations.
