India has now been ranked at the 108th spot globally for electoral democracy, far behind nations like Tanzania, Bolivia, Mexico, Singapore, and even Nigeria, which comes in at a modest 91st spot by V-Dem Institute in its Electoral Democracy Report for 2023. This ranking may come as a shock to many, but it is also far below nations like Tanzania, Bolivia, Mexico, Singapore, and even India.

• India’s standing on the Liberal Democracy Index (LDI) is once more appallingly low, and it even has the sad distinction of falling from 100th place in 2022 to 108th this year.
• The only other factor that might temporarily cheer democratic and patriotic Indians is the fact that Pakistan, which is next door and is currently experiencing a severe economic crisis, is only ranked two places lower, at 110.
• In its most recent report, the George Soros-funded V-Dem Institute asserted that the average global citizen’s level of democracy had fallen to that of 1986.

‘Defiance in the Face of Autocratization’ Report

According to the report “Defiance in the Face of Autocratization,” the current wave of autocratization affects almost every region of the world, but in the Asia-Pacific, democracy has suffered significantly, and nearly 3.5 billion people now live in what the report refers to as “electoral autocracies” in these regions. India is obviously listed among them in high regard.

• In keeping with its anti-Indian tone, the report criticised one of the largest democracies in the world for turning into an electoral autocrat by restricting free speech, engaging in government censorship of the media, and oppressing civil society organisations.
• V-Dem justifies India’s low ranking as a democracy in its study by asserting that autocratization frequently results from the deterioration of democratic institutions and citing nations like El Salvador and Hungary as examples.
