India Prepares to Launch INS Aridhaman, Boosting Sea-Based Nuclear Deterrent

India is all set to commission INS Aridhaman, its third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine built indigenously. This new submarine is a major step in strengthening India’s sea-based nuclear deterrence. The vessel has entered its final trials, and the Navy has confirmed that it will join active service soon.

Growth of India’s Nuclear Submarine Program

INS Aridhaman comes after the commissioning of INS Arighaat in August 2025. With Aridhaman, India will operate three nuclear ballistic missile submarines at the same time for the first time. This development improves the credibility of India’s second-strike nuclear capability, an important part of its defense strategy.

Advanced Missile and Endurance Capabilities

INS Aridhaman is designed to carry more long-range nuclear missiles than the earlier submarines, INS Arihant and INS Arighaat. Its larger size provides better endurance, safety, and survivability. A fourth submarine is already under construction to further strengthen India’s strategic nuclear capabilities.

India’s Naval Presence in the Indian Ocean and Africa

The Navy is also focusing on international cooperation. Admiral Dinesh Tripathi highlighted the Indian Ocean Ship Sagar initiative, which involved navies from nine regional countries. Another program, the Africa-India Key Maritime Exercise, was conducted with nine African partner nations in Dar es Salaam, encouraging collaboration and sharing maritime practices.

Navy Modernisation and Strengthening Operations

The Navy is upgrading its aviation and submarine capabilities. Four Rafale fighter jets are expected by 2029. Project 75 India, aiming to acquire six advanced submarines, is nearing approval. During Operation Sindoor, India’s assertive naval deployment, including a carrier battle group, forced Pakistan’s fleet to stay near its coast, showing India’s strengthened maritime power.
