India Ranks 3rd Globally in Renewable Energy Capacity, Says IRENA

In the year 2025 India has been emerged as the third-largest renewable energy market in world. With this it is marking the new milestone in its clean energy journey. According to the numbers released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) the country have added around 45 GW of renewable capacity in a single year. The mainly this capacity is driven by solar and wind power energy. With this India’s making step towards to focus on renewables and to achieve the sustainable goals.

India’s Renewable Energy Growth 2025 Key Highlights

Renewable energy capacity of India has seen the sharp rise over the last few years.

Total installed capacity in 2025 is around 250.5 GW.

Earlier the capacity in the year 2023 was stood at 175.9 GW.

In the year 2025 the annual edition has done around 45 GW.

This growth indicates that India’s push toward to achieving the clean energy targets and to reducing the dependence on fossil fuels.

Solar Energy Major Contributor the Transition

Solar energy has been playing the crucial role and it is the biggest contributor to  renewable expansion of India.

Solar capacity addition for the year 2025 was 37 GW. Also the India ranked second after China in the solar energy expansions.

Across Asia the solar capacity has been grown rapidly and in the last couple of years it is the major contributing factor to the renewable energy.

The Energy Mix with Wind and Hydropower

As the solar energy leads the way other sources are also expanding the footprint day by day.

Wind Energy

In the year 2025 6.3 GW addition of energy capacity via by using the Wind and it shows that wind energy is growing day by day.

Also the hydropower energy generation has increased from the 52 GW in 2024 to 56 GW in the year 2025.

Along with that the Pumped Hydro Storage capacity has been grow from 4.7 GW to 7.2 GW.

Overall the Globally the renewable energy generation is growing to make the world sustainable.

Total global capacity: 5,149 GW

Addition in 2025: 692 GW (15.5% growth)

Renewables share: 49.4% of total capacity
