India Shines at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad 2025

India has once again showcased its strong foundation in science education by winning two gold and two silver medals at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2025, held in Dubai, UAE. With this performance, India secured sixth place globally among 90 participating countries, underlining its growing presence in international academic competitions.

Background

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is an annual global competition that brings together some of the brightest high school students from around the world to test their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in chemistry. India has been competing in the IChO since 1999 and has maintained a strong performance record. The national selection and training are conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai.

Significance of the Achievement

India’s results at the IChO 2025 — two gold medals and two silver medals — reflect not only the capability of its young talent but also the success of its structured Olympiad training ecosystem. Historically, Indian students have earned 30% gold, 53% silver, and 17% bronze medals, with improvements seen in recent years. The performance boosts India’s global academic profile and instills national pride in scientific excellence.

Objectives and Training Process

The aim of India’s participation in IChO is to,

  • Promote excellence in chemical education at the school level
  • Identify and nurture scientific talent
  • Enhance India’s standing in the global science community

Students undergo multiple rounds of rigorous selection through National Olympiad Examinations conducted by HBCSE, followed by comprehensive training at orientation and pre-departure camps. The mentoring team for IChO 2025 included senior faculty and scientific observers from leading Indian institutions like IISER Pune, Delhi University, and TIFR.

Key Features of IChO 2025 Participation

  1. Held in Dubai from July 5 to 14, with 354 students from 90 countries.
  2. India was represented by four students selected through national-level Olympiads.
  3. The team’s success reflects the infrastructural and academic support provided by government agencies such as the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), DST, DOS, and the Ministry of Education.
  4. India’s delegation was among top performers, matching ranks with teams from Israel, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine.
