India Synthesizes Rare Anti-Doping Reference Material for Global Use
In a groundbreaking scientific achievement, India has developed a rare anti-doping reference material—Methandienone Long-Term Metabolite (LTM)—to strengthen drug testing mechanisms in sports. This effort is the result of a strategic collaboration between the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) Guwahati and the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), New Delhi, under the Department of Pharmaceuticals. The initiative places India among a small group of nations capable of synthesizing such highly specialized materials, furthering the global cause of clean sports.
Reference Materials (RMs) are ultra-purified chemical substances or their metabolites used for accurate analytical testing. In anti-doping contexts, these materials help labs,
Only 4–5 institutions globally produce these rare RMs, making them both costly and hard to access. India’s ability to now synthesize them domestically marks a major scientific and strategic milestone.
Since 2020, NIPER Guwahati and NDTL have been working together to create 22 non-commercial RMs crucial for anti-doping analysis. So far, 12 of these have already been synthesized, with Methandienone LTM being the latest.
This project shows India’s commitment to,
The development of Methandienone LTM offers multiple benefits,
This step also aligns with India’s broader sports vision under initiatives like Fit India and efforts to promote ethics and accountability in athletics.
