India to Host Inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy 2027
The upcoming ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 will take place in India following the transfer of the maiden championship from Sri Lanka by the ICC. The championship will take place between February 14 and February 28, 2027, with six sides vying for the championship trophy. The move comes following the apprehensions about government meddling in the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket, which is currently running its affairs with an interim committee as it implements the reform measures.
The championship was initially awarded to Sri Lanka. However, the ICC later stripped the country of the hosting rights amid concerns about government meddling in the affairs of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Sri Lanka Cricket is currently undergoing reforms that were mandated by the ICC. The ongoing reforms necessitated the transfer of the hosting of the championship to India.
The event will be held between February 14 and February 28, 2027.
The championship match on February 28 will mark the end of the first Women’s Champions Trophy.
Six teams will be playing in the inaugural series,
Australia is currently the defending T20 World Cup champion, while the rest of the teams in the competition will try to create their history in the first-ever Women’s Champions Trophy.
The format of the competition among the six teams will involve playing through a round robin league format where all the sides get to play each other.
Following the league, the two best performing sides in the table will qualify for the finals that will take place on the 28th of February. This ensures that every team gets ample chances to make it to the finals of the tournament.
