India to Host World Indoor Athletics Championships 2028: A Historic First
India has secured the hosting rights for the World Indoor Athletics Championships 2028. With this it is marking a historic first for the country. The event will be held in Odisha at the Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium which is situated in Bhubaneswar. The decision was announced by the World Athletics President Sebastian Coe ahead of the 2026 championships in Poland.
India’s selection as host represents the major breakthrough in its sports journey. As for the time it will be held in the the country hosts this prestigious indoor athletics competition.
The event is held every two years and features top athletes from around the world and they are competing in indoor track and field disciplines.
Selection of Odisha reflects its rising reputation as a sports hub and also supported by strong infrastructure and consistent investment in hosting international events.
This achievement places India alongside countries like Japan, Qatar and China who have previously hosted the championship in Asia.
The championships will be hosted at the Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
This stadium is India’s only dedicated indoor athletics facility.
It was built in 2024 and it meets international standards and has already attracted global attention.
The venue was inspected by a World Athletics delegation earlier and they are ensured that it has meet all technical requirements.
The bid for hosting the 2028 championships was submitted by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and approved by the World Athletics Council.
The announcement was made during a press conference just ahead of the 2026 edition in Poland.
This approval shows the confidence of India’s preparedness and organizational ability.
It also reflects growing trust in as emerging nations to host major sporting events and to expand lobal footprints.
Since start India has had limited success in the World Indoor Championships so far. No Indian athlete has ever won a medal at this event and no Indian participants are competing in the 2026 edition.
This gap highlight the need for stronger focus on indoor athletics training and talent development.
Hosting the event could serve as a model for improving performance, encouraging participation.
