India To Initiate Satellite Based Tolling On Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway

In a development announced by India’s Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, the nation is set to embark on testing (Global navigation satellite system) GNSS-based toll collection on the Mysuru-Bengaluru Expressway. This move underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technologies to modernize infrastructure and improve transportation systems.

A Paradigm Shift in Toll Collection

  • The GNSS-based tolling system marks a departure from conventional toll collection methods, offering a seamless and efficient alternative.
  • Unlike toll gates, which necessitate vehicles to halt for payment, GNSS technology enables precise positioning of vehicles, allowing tolls to be calculated based on the distance traveled on the highway.
  • This facilitates uninterrupted movement and ensures fair tolling by considering road usage.

Economic Viability and Efficiency

  • One advantage of GNSS-based tolling lies in its economic feasibility. By accounting for the total distance traveled, this system eliminates the need for physical toll booths and associated infrastructure, thereby reducing operational costs.
  • Moreover, it promises to significantly reduce congestion at toll plazas, minimizing travel time and enhancing efficiency.

Fastag: A Stepping Stone to Innovation

  • India’s journey towards modern toll collection systems began with the introduction of Fastags, a radio frequency identification-based technology, in 2016.
  • Mandated since January 2021, Fastags have witnessed widespread adoption, with over 8.13 crore issued and an impressive penetration rate of 98%.
  • These tags have played a pivotal role in reducing waiting times at toll plazas from 8 minutes to 47 seconds during 2018-19.

The GNSS Advantage

  • While Fastags have been instrumental in streamlining toll collection, the advent of GNSS technology promises to further elevate the efficiency and convenience of the system.
  • By eliminating the need for physical tags and offering automated payment deductions directly from linked bank accounts, GNSS-based tolling alleviates the hassle of manual top-ups and ensures a seamless payment experience for commuters.

The Road Ahead

  • As India sets its sights on embracing new technologies to revolutionize toll collection, Gadkari affirmed the government’s commitment to implementing GPS-based toll systems within the next six months.
  • This endeavor aims to replace traditional toll plazas with solutions that prioritize efficiency, convenience, and sustainability.

Transforming India’s Transportation Landscape

  • The adoption of GNSS-based tolling heralds a new era in India’s transportation landscape, marked by efficiency, reduced congestion, and greater convenience for commuters.
  • As the government continues to embrace innovation and technology-driven solutions, the journey towards a seamless and hassle-free transportation network gathers momentum, promising a brighter future for all stakeholders involved.
