India to Ink Repeat Order for 73,000 SiG 716 Rifles from the US
The Indian Defence Ministry is finalizing a repeat order for 73,000 SiG 716 G2 patrol assault rifles from the US to equip its frontline troops. This follows a 2019 procurement of 72,400 SiG 716 rifles (7.62 x 51mm calibre) under the ‘Buy (Global)’ category through a fast-track procedure, which were distributed across the Army, Air Force, and Navy.
The new order aims to address the requirements of remaining frontline soldiers, aligning with the Army’s revised operational philosophy favoring the 7.62 x 51mm calibre for its longer range, increased lethality, and automatic firing mode. The SiG 716 has been integrated with OFB-manufactured ammunition and equipped with Picatinny rails for mounting accessories like optical sights and grenade launchers.
In February 2019, India contracted 72,400 SiG 716 rifles from SIG Sauer Inc, USA. These rifles were allocated to the Army (66,400), Air Force (4,000), and Navy (2,000). Initially intended for frontline troops, the distribution was later expanded to over 400 infantry battalions, with variations in the number of rifles per battalion.
The decision for a repeat order stems from the rifle’s superior performance and the Army’s operational shift in 2016, prioritizing the 7.62 x 51mm calibre over the 5.56 x 45mm. The SiG 716’s extended range, greater lethality, and automatic mode offer significant advantages over the INSAS and AK-47 rifles.
The Army has been using OFB-manufactured 7.62mm medium machine gun ammunition with the SiG 716, which has shown consistent performance. Accessories such as optical sights and forehand grips are being procured separately, with some already sourced indigenously. These accessories enhance the rifle’s versatility and effectiveness in various roles.
