India-US Joint Military Exercise “EX TIGER TRIUMPH – 24”

A joint military exercise called Tiger Triumph-24 between India and the United States started on March 18 and will continue until March 31. This exercise is taking place on the Eastern Seaboard (East Coast) of India.

The main purpose of this exercise is to improve cooperation between the two countries’ armed forces for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

EX TIGER TRIUMPH – 24 Participants

From the Indian side:

  • Indian Navy ships, helicopters, and landing crafts
  • Indian Army personnel and vehicles
  • Indian Air Force aircraft and helicopters
  • Rapid Action Medical Team (RAMT)

From the US side:

  • US Navy ships
  • US Marine Corps troops
  • US Army troops

EX TIGER TRIUMPH – 24 Phases

Harbour Phase (March 18 – March 25)

  • Training sessions
  • Expert discussions
  • Sports events
  • Social interactions between Indian and US personnel

Sea Phase (March 25 – March 31)

  • Ships and troops from both sides will conduct maritime, amphibious, and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief operations based on simulated scenarios.

Previous Exercises and Alliances

  • The first Tiger Triumph exercise was held in 2019 for 9 days.
  • India and the US also participated in the Milan-24 multilateral naval exercise in February 2024.
  • They took part in the Sea-Defenders 2024 maritime security exercise in Port Blair on March 8, 2024.

Defence Cooperation Talks

On March 18, 2024, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin discussed:

  • Bilateral defence cooperation
  • Regional security issues
  • Implementing the India-US Defence Cooperation Roadmap
  • Role of the Indian Navy in anti-piracy operations
  • Repairing US naval ships in Indian shipyards

They had last met in November 2023 for the India-US Ministerial 2+2 Dialogue in New Delhi.
