India and the United States are set to elevate their space collaboration to new heights with the upcoming joint launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, in a recent meeting with a high-level NASA delegation led by Administrator Mr. Bill Nelson, announced the launch schedule for the first quarter of the next year.
NISAR, slated for launch aboard India’s GSLV, is a microwave remote sensing satellite designed for comprehensive Earth observation. The satellite’s data will be instrumental in studying diverse aspects, including land ecosystems, solid earth deformation, mountain and polar cryosphere dynamics, sea ice behavior, and coastal ocean phenomena at both regional and global scales.
The integration process of NISAR is well underway, with ISRO’s S-band SAR seamlessly integrated with NASA’s L-band SAR at JPL/NASA. Currently undergoing testing at URSC, Bangalore, with active participation from NASA/JPL officials, the integrated L & S band SAR promises cutting-edge capabilities for Earth observation.
The collaboration between ISRO and NASA extends beyond satellite launches. A Joint Working Group (JWG) on Human Spaceflight Cooperation has been formed, exploring various dimensions like radiation impact studies, micro meteorite & orbital debris shield studies, and space health and medicine aspects. The 8th meeting of India-USA Joint Working Group on Civil Space Cooperation (CSJWG) in January 2023 marked a significant step in this direction.
ISRO and the Department of Space (DoS) are engaged in discussions with prominent US industries such as Boeing, Blue Origin, and Voyager, exploring avenues for cooperation. The collaboration also extends to joint ventures with Indian commercial entities. A concept paper on the Implementing Arrangement (IA) between ISRO and NASA is under consideration, showcasing a commitment to fostering deep-rooted collaborations.
ISRO is exploring the feasibility of utilizing NASA’s Hypervelocity Impact Test (HVIT) facility for testing Gaganyaan module Micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) protection shields. This underscores the commitment to leveraging each other’s strengths and resources for mutual benefit.
Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the remarkable growth of the Indian space sector startup ecosystem, a direct outcome of the reforms initiated by Prime Minister Modi. The number of space startups has surged from single digits to over 150 within a short span of about four years, with several of them evolving into lucrative ventures.
1. What is the NISAR satellite, and what are its primary objectives?
Answer: The NISAR satellite is a microwave remote sensing satellite designed for comprehensive Earth observation. Its objectives include studying land ecosystems, solid earth deformation, mountain and polar cryosphere dynamics, sea ice behavior, and coastal ocean phenomena at both regional and global scales.
2. Which two bands are seamlessly integrated in the NISAR satellite during the integration process, and where is the testing currently taking place?
Answer: The S-band SAR from ISRO is integrated with NASA’s L-band SAR, and the testing is currently underway at URSC, Bangalore.
3. How is the collaboration between ISRO and NASA extending beyond satellite launches?
Answer: The collaboration includes a Joint Working Group (JWG) on Human Spaceflight Cooperation, exploring dimensions like radiation impact studies and space health. A significant step was the 8th meeting of India-USA Joint Working Group on Civil Space Cooperation (CSJWG) in January 2023.
