India Wins Asian Games 2026 Women’s Hockey Gold After 44 Years
India won the Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal after a 44-year gap as they beat China 1-0 in the final match held on October 2, 2026. The winner of the gold was Lalremsiami who scored in the 10th minute with her reverse-stick shot, while India’s defenders managed to defend against China’s onslaught. The goalkeeper Savita Punia played well as she saved a penalty stroke for India to defend the lead. India won the women’s hockey gold after 44 years, since 1982 and also booked a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The match started after a delay of one hour since the team buses were caught in traffic before reaching the ground. Once the game started, China tried to take an aggressive start but India defended well.
India scored the only goal in the 10th minute. Sakshi Rana put in a pass inside the circle for Lalremsiami who then scored with his reverse-stick shot.
This goal was decisive for India as they went on to win with the scoreline of 1-0.
China kept up the pressure during the course of the game, especially in the second and third quarters. However, the Chinese team attempted to attack using flanks and gained penalty corners; however, they couldn’t find ways to score from the created chances.
India was constantly putting pressure on the attacking plays of the Chinese team. The Indian players were giving their body for the cause to defend the slim lead of their team with a 1-0 scoreline.
In this regard, it is possible to say that the success of India was not only the result of an early goal of Lalremsiami.
The most decisive moment of the match took place in the 24th minute when the Chinese team was awarded a penalty stroke due to an obstruction made by Lalremsiami.
India had a chance to tie the scores, but Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia managed to make a crucial save, diving to the left side and stopping the ball.
India had its last women’s Asian Games gold medal in 1982. Hence, the 2026 gold medal ended their 44 years of wait for winning continental championships.
It was the second time that the Indian women had won a continental championship in women’s Asian Games. They had won gold medal after beating China in the 2026 Asian Games held in home continent.
This achievement has allowed the Indian women’s hockey team to qualify directly for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The game was special for Lalremsiami because it was her 200th game at international level.
She scored the winning goal in the 10th minute in the game. Her reverse stick goal gave the Indian team the lead, which turned out to be crucial in winning the gold medal.
India has a rich tradition of playing women’s hockey in Asian Games. In 1982, the country last won the gold before claiming the title in 2026.
The women’s national side of India has earned silver and bronze medals in past Asian Games events. The gold medal of 2026 is very important for the team as it signifies their comeback to the top of Asia along with qualification for upcoming Summer Olympics.
