IndiaAI and ICMR Sign MoU to Strengthen AI-Driven Healthcare in India
IndiaAI, the Government of India’s flagship Artificial Intelligence initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to promote AI-based healthcare innovation in the country.
The partnership aims to combine IndiaAI’s digital infrastructure and AI ecosystem with ICMR’s expertise in biomedical and public health research. The collaboration is expected to support the development of ethical, scalable, and research-driven AI healthcare solutions for India.
The IndiaAI–ICMR partnership is being seen as a major step towards building a nationally integrated AI ecosystem for healthcare. The agreement focuses on improving access to healthcare data, expanding computing infrastructure, and encouraging AI research for public health challenges.
The collaboration also highlights India’s growing role in responsible AI governance in the healthcare sector.
Under the agreement, ICMR will contribute anonymised and ethics-approved healthcare datasets, AI models, and toolkits developed under its MIDAS framework to the AIKosh platform.
This move is expected to help:
The availability of trusted healthcare datasets has often been a major challenge for AI research in India. The partnership seeks to address this gap.
IndiaAI will provide ICMR with subsidised access to GPU-based and high-performance computing infrastructure.
Advanced AI models require large computing power, especially in areas such as:
By improving access to computing infrastructure, the partnership aims to accelerate AI research in the medical field.
Both organisations will work together on AI-based solutions for major public health concerns in India.
The solutions will be developed using:
The focus will remain on practical healthcare applications that can improve diagnosis, research efficiency, and healthcare delivery.
MIDAS stands for Medical Information Data for AI Solutions.
It is an ICMR initiative designed to support ethical and structured use of medical data for Artificial Intelligence research and healthcare innovation.
The framework helps ensure:
The latest MoU builds on earlier cooperation between the two institutions.
In September 2025, IndiaAI and ICMR’s National Institute for Research in Digital Health and Data Sciences (NIRDHDS) were recognised as Pioneer Countries under the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network (GRN).
The initiative was co-founded with the United Kingdom and Singapore to promote responsible governance of AI in healthcare.
Later, a tripartite agreement between IndiaAI, ICMR (NIRDHDS), and HealthAI further expanded cooperation in AI-based healthcare systems.
The healthcare sector is increasingly using Artificial Intelligence for faster diagnosis, predictive healthcare, disease monitoring, and medical research.
However, challenges such as limited datasets, lack of computing infrastructure, and concerns around data privacy have slowed progress.
The IndiaAI–ICMR collaboration aims to address these issues by creating:
The initiative could also help India become a global leader in responsible AI healthcare research.
The Government of India has been actively promoting Artificial Intelligence across sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance.
IndiaAI serves as the national AI mission focused on:
Meanwhile, ICMR remains the country’s apex biomedical research organisation and plays a central role in health research and policy support.
The MoU focuses on developing AI-driven healthcare solutions, research infrastructure, and biomedical datasets in India.
