Indian-American Bruhat Soma Triumphs at Scripps National Spelling Bee
In a remarkable display of spelling prowess, Bruhat Soma, a 12-year-old Indian-American seventh-grader from Florida, has emerged victorious at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee. Maintaining the dominance of the small ethnic community in this prestigious competition, Bruhat correctly spelled 29 words in the tiebreaker round, earning him more than $50,000 in cash and other prizes.
The 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee came down to a thrilling tiebreaker between Bruhat and Faizan Zaki. In the lightning round, Bruhat managed to correctly spell an impressive 29 words in 90 seconds, outshining Faizan, who spelled 20 words correctly.
Corrie Loeffler, the Bee’s executive director, praised the final two spellers, stating, “It was clear that Faizan and Bruhat showed up tonight ready to take down the dictionary. Together, they were a powerful match.”
This was Bruhat’s third time participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. In 2023, he tied for 74th place, and in 2022, he tied for 163rd place. His perseverance and dedication paid off as he impressed the judges with his knowledge and composure at just 12 years old.
Indian-Americans have consistently excelled at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, with 29 champions emerging from the community since 1999. This year’s competition featured five Indian-American finalists out of the eight finalists, further solidifying their dominance in the prestigious event.
Faizan Zaki of Allen, Texas, received $25,000 for his impressive performance as the runner-up. Shrey Parikh of Rancho Cucamonga, California, and Ananya Prassanna of Apex, North Carolina, tied for third place, each receiving $12,500.
Coached by 16-year-old former speller Sam Evans, Bruhat had previously won the Words of Wisdom Bee and SpellPundit Bee before arriving in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C., for the prestigious competition. His multifaceted interests and hobbies, combined with his dedication to preparation, undoubtedly contributed to his success.
As Bruhat Soma basks in the glory of his achievement, his triumph serves as an inspiration to aspiring spellers worldwide, highlighting the importance of perseverance, dedication, and a passion for learning.
