Indian Army Launches Indigenous ‘SAKSHAM’ Anti-Drone Grid

The Indian Army has taken a significant step in modernising its air defence capabilities with the launch of SAKSHAM, an indigenous Counter Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Grid. Designed to detect, track, identify, and neutralise enemy drones in real time, SAKSHAM represents a major advancement in integrated battlefield management and aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

About SAKSHAM

  • SAKSHAM stands for Situational Awareness for Kinetic Soft and Hard Kill Assets Management. It is an advanced command and control network that enhances the army’s airspace control capabilities.
  • Developed in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Ghaziabad.
  • Operates on the Army Data Network (ADN) for secure communications.
  • Provides a unified Recognised UAS Picture across the Tactical Battlefield Space (TBS), up to 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) above ground.

Importance in Modern Warfare

  • The Tactical Battlefield Space (TBS) concept emerged after Operation Sindoor, which revealed increased drone threats during cross-border operations.
  • Modern warfare now demands control of airspace above troops, not just ground dominance.
  • SAKSHAM ensures real-time threat detection and neutralisation, critical for battlefield supremacy.

Key Features

  • Modular Grid System: Links multiple counter-drone weapons and sensors.
  • Multi-Sensor Fusion: Integrates radar, electro-optical systems, and other sources.
  • AI-Driven Threat Analysis: Automates decision-making for rapid and accurate response.
  • Field Ready: Set for Fast Track Procurement (FTP) route induction within a year.
