Indian Institute of Technology Madras Introduces ‘OmegaBall’, India’s First Three-Team Football Format

Indian Institute of Technology Madras has introduced the new sport which named is OmegaBall. It is an innovative three-team football format and marks the its first-ever entry into the country. The initiative not only brings the new dimension to competitive sports but also showcase the IIT Madras commitment to the innovation beyond academics. Alongside with the launch the institute has also proposed the formation of the national-level OmegaBall Club to promote and expand the sport across India.

OmegaBall Debuts in India with Inter-College Tournament

To mark this milestone the IIT Madras have organized an inter-college OmegaBall tournament on April 17, 2026 in the campus football field.

The event saw participation from the several prominent institutions in Chennai which includes the,

  • Loyola College, Guru Nanak College, Dr. Ambedkar Law University, The New College, Saveetha University and YMCA College of Physical Education and  along with IIT Madras own teams.

The tournament have generated the strong enthusiasm among students and it showcased the growing appeal of innovative sports formats.

What is OmegaBall? A New Age Football Format

OmegaBall is the fast-paced variation of football which introduces a completely new gameplay structure.

Unlike traditional football,

It features the three teams playing simultaneously on a circular field with three goals.

Each team attacks the two goals while defending one and it is creating a dynamic and continuous flow of action.

This design increases,

  • The Ball interaction, scoring opportunities and the overall excitement for both players and spectators.
  • The format is already gaining the popularity in regions like the United States, Brazil and Europe and make it as a global emerging sport.

IIT Madras Leading Sports Innovation

The initiative was launched by the V. Kamakoti and he highlighted the importance of innovation in sports.

He emphasized that to introducing OmegaBall aligns with IIT Madras vision of,

  • Encouraging creativity, expanding student engagement and contributing to the evolution of the India’s sports ecosystem.

IIT Madras has previously been the pioneer in introducing sports-based admissions and it further reinforcing its commitment to holistic student development.
