Indian Navy Assumes Command of Combined Task Force 154

The Indian Navy has assumed command of Combined Task Force 154 (CTF-154) under the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), marking a significant milestone in India’s growing maritime presence. This is the first time India has led this multinational training task force, highlighting its expanding strategic role in global maritime security.

Change of Command Ceremony in Bahrain

The change of command ceremony took place at the Combined Maritime Forces Headquarters in Manama, Bahrain. The event was presided over by Vice Admiral Curt A. Renshaw and attended by senior military officials from various member nations. Representatives of the Indian Navy were also present during the formal transfer of leadership.

The ceremony symbolized international confidence in India’s naval capabilities and leadership in multinational maritime cooperation.

About Combined Task Force 154

Combined Task Force 154 was established in May 2023 as part of the 47-nation Combined Maritime Forces. Unlike other operational task forces that focus on anti-piracy or counter-smuggling operations, CTF-154 is dedicated primarily to training and capacity building.

Its main objective is to enhance professional standards and maritime coordination among member navies through structured programs and joint exercises.

Role and Key Activities of CTF-154

CTF-154 conducts regular Maritime Security Enhancement Training (MSET) programs. These initiatives aim to improve maritime domain awareness, operational coordination, and crisis response mechanisms among participating nations.

The task force also organizes multinational exercises such as:

  • Compass Rose
  • Northern Readiness
  • Southern Readiness

These exercises strengthen interoperability and operational readiness across the Middle East and the wider Indian Ocean Region.

Significance for India

India’s leadership of CTF-154 reflects its commitment to collaborative maritime security and regional stability. It also reinforces India’s strategic focus on the Indian Ocean Region, which is vital for global trade and energy security.

By leading this multinational training initiative, India enhances its diplomatic engagement, defense partnerships, and influence within international maritime frameworks.

The development also aligns with India’s broader vision of ensuring a free, open, and secure maritime environment.
