Indian Navy Set To Participate in SIMBEX 2025

The Indian Navy is participating in the 32nd edition of SIMBEX (Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise) in Singapore, continuing a long-standing tradition of maritime cooperation with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). This exercise reflects India’s growing naval engagements in Southeast Asia under its Act East Policy and Vision SAGAR, aligning defence and diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific.

Background

SIMBEX began in 1994 and is one of India’s longest uninterrupted naval bilateral exercises. Originally named Exercise Lion King, this engagement has evolved into a complex and high-value maritime coordination effort. The partnership emphasizes operational cooperation, technical exchange, maritime domain awareness, and regional security between India and Singapore. It reflects decades of joint work in promoting regional stability and ensuring a safe maritime commons in the Indo-Pacific.

Significance

SIMBEX is a critical platform to project India’s naval capabilities, build interoperability, and foster mutual trust. This year’s edition gains special importance as India and Singapore mark 60 years of diplomatic relations. It reinforces common maritime interests amid rising regional tensions, piracy threats, and freedom of navigation concerns. The Indian Navy’s extended deployment also reaffirms India’s role as a net security provider in the region.

Objectives

  • Enhance bilateral naval interoperability and coordination
  • Advance shared goals of maritime security and safe sea-lanes
  • Support India’s Act East Policy and the vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)
  • Develop joint response capabilities in maritime threats and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) scenarios

Key Features

  • The Indian Navy contingent includes INS Delhi (Destroyer), INS Satpura (Frigate), INS Kiltan (Corvette), and INS Shakti (Fleet Support Ship).
  • These are indigenously designed, frontline naval assets integrated with the latest technologies for deep-sea missions.
  • The engagement also involves Search and Rescue (SAR), threat response, and communication drills under complex maritime conditions.
  • SIMBEX 2025 follows the success of the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise 2023, expanding multilateral outreach.

Impact and Future Engagements

The exercise showcases India’s readiness for extended blue-water operations and supports the principle of a rules-based maritime order. It promotes cooperative security arrangements vital for countering non-state actors, piracy, and asserting peaceful maritime navigation.

Additionally, India will host major future maritime events such as the International Fleet Review, Multinational Naval Exercise MILAN, and the IONS Conclave of Chiefs in Visakhapatnam in early 2026. These upcoming engagements will reinforce India’s diplomatic and operational maritime leadership in the Indo-Pacific.
