During the ceremony, Board of Police Commissioners Chair Evelise Ribeiro acknowledged that Colon’s appointment as assistant police chief marked “another glass ceiling being broken”. Ribeiro also mentioned that Colon, who hails from Mumbai, is not only the second-ever female assistant chief of color but also the first Indian to hold the position.
According to the report, Colon migrated to the United States along with her family when she was 11 years old, and 15 years ago, she joined the New Haven Police Department (NHPD). She completed her police training in December 2008 and earned a degree in criminal justice from the University of New Haven. She now joins two other assistant chiefs, David Zannelli and Bertram Ettienne, to form what the Board of Police Commissioners Chair Evelise Ribeiro described as a “dream team” surrounding police chief Karl Jacobson.
