Indian Peacekeepers Honoured Posthumously with Dag Hammarksjold

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, received the Dag Hammarksjold Medals on behalf of Head Constables Shishupal Singh and Sanwala Ram Vishnoi. The Dag Hammarksjold Medal is the highest honor awarded to UN peacekeepers. It is awarded posthumously to members of peacekeeping operations as a tribute to the sacrifice of those who have lost their lives in peacekeeping operations. The ceremony took place at the UN headquarters in New York to commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers. The medal is named after the second Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dag Hammarskjold.

Indian Peacekeepers Honoured Posthumously with Dag Hammarksjold: Key Points

  • Head Constables Shishupal Singh and Sanwala Ram Vishnoi of the Border Security Force lost their lives while serving under the UN flag last year in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
  • They used to serve with the Organisation Stabilisation Mission (MONUSCO) in the country.
  • Meanwhile, Shaber Taher Ali, employed in a civilian capacity with the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), was also posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjold Medal, which was received by Under-Secretary for Field Support, Atul Khare.
  • Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj informed that they are immortalized by their selfless sacrifice, devotion to duty, and dauntless courage, and will always serve as an inspiration for all.
  • The UN Secretary-General António Guterres informed that the UN’s 87,000-plus peacekeepers worldwide are a beacon of hope and protection’ for vulnerable civilians in an increasingly dangerous and uncertain world.
  • Further, the Permanent Mission of India to the UN hosted a reception that was attended by more than 200 guests to pay their respects near the Remembrance Board.
  • The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed annually on May 29. It recognizes peacekeepers’ dedication, professionalism, and bravery worldwide. India one of the largest troop-contributing countries
  • Since the inception of the UN’s peacekeeping operations in the 1950s, India has made contributions to its peacekeeping operations and is one of the largest troop-contributing countries.
  • India has deployed more than 275,000 troops, including a significant number of women peacekeepers, in over 51 UN peacekeeping missions.
  • Additionally, India was the first nation to send an all-female contingent to a UN peacekeeping operation in Liberia in 2007.
