Indian Physicist Deepak Dhar Wins 2026 Dirac Medal
Indian physicist Deepak Dhar has been selected as the recipient of the Dirac Medal awarded for his achievements in the theoretical physics. The award was announced on 8th August, 2026 by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. He will be honoured along with the Bernard Derrida from France, Marc Mézard from Italy, and Haim Sompolinsky from Israel and the United States. It acknowledges his seminal contributions to the study of statistical mechanics and physics involving complex systems and interactions with optimisation, neuroscience and artificial intelligence.
Deepak Dhar is an Indian theoretical physicist whose primary contributions lie in the field of statistical mechanics and complex systems.
One of his major contributions is the investigation of collective behaviour exhibited by systems consisting of many interacting parts. Amongst his most well-known contributions lies the development of sandpile models, that have played an important role in self-organised criticality.
