Indian Railways Conducts Trial Run of Asia’s Longest Freight Train ‘Rudrastra’
In a landmark achievement, the Indian Railways has successfully conducted the trial run of Asia’s longest freight train, named ‘Rudrastra’. Spanning an incredible 4.5 kilometres in length, the mammoth goods train is set to transform freight transport in India by improving efficiency, reducing turnaround time, and saving resources.
The trial run was held between Ganjkhwaja railway station in Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh, and Garhwa in Jharkhand—covering 209 kilometres in 5 hours 10 minutes at an average speed of 40.5 km/h.
According to Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Uday Singh Meena, the successful trial paves the way for regular freight movement from the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Division (DDU) of East Central Railway to the Dhanbad Division. This will help in quicker loading, faster delivery of goods, and improved railway logistics.
The train’s massive capacity means fewer trips are required to move large volumes of cargo, leading to,
The train’s structure was made possible by innovative coupling techniques and precise engine placement to ensure uniform traction and braking power. In effect, it was like five goods trains connected end-to-end—with the lead section powered by two engines.
Handling such a massive train requires highly skilled coordination between crew members, signal operators, and control centres to ensure safe passage across multiple stations.
