About 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026

The 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026 took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, uniting some of the best young biology students worldwide.

Event Details

  • Location: Vilnius, Lithuania
  • Timeframe: July 12 to July 19, 2026
  • Countries Participating: 78
  • Total Number of Participants: 307
  • Gold Medals Awarded: 31
  • Silver Medals Awarded: 61
  • Bronze Medals Awarded: 91

The International Biology Olympiad is one of the best competitions for pre-university learners fascinated by biology.

Challenging Practical and Theoretical Assessments

The IBO 2026 included sophisticated practical and theoretical evaluations meant to assess analytical abilities, experimental expertise, and scientific reasoning.

Practical Assessment

The six-hour practical assessment consisted of four specific areas of specialization,

Molecular Biology and Biochemistry

  • Restriction digestion
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • Enzyme assays

Animal Physiology

  • Drug pharmacokinetics
  • Digital methodologies in biochemical research

Animal Morphology and Systematics

  • Insect taxonomy
  • Morphological structures and classification

Plant Computational Biology

  • Image analysis of root systems using Image
  • Analysis of transcriptome
  • Evaluation of plant traits

The practical tasks required students to implement high-standard practical techniques and to interpret real experimental results.

Theory Test Assessed Advanced Biological Principles

The theory test lasted for six hours and contained 100 research-related questions.

The test not only examined the cognitive ability but also measured the scientific thinking in various areas including,

  • Cell Biology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Genetics
  • Evolution
  • Ecology
  • Animal Sciences
  • Plant Sciences
  • Ethology
  • Biosystematics

The students processed research information and made sense out of scientific findings and solved difficult biological problems comparable to those in higher education institutions and research laboratories.

Indian Olympiad Team and Mentors

The Indian team was led by qualified and skilled academics from the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE-TIFR).

Team Leaders

  • Prof. Rekha Vartak (Retd., HBCSE-TIFR, Mumbai)
  • Dr. Anupama Ronad (HBCSE-TIFR)

Scientific Observers

  • Dr. Ranjithsinh Devkar (M.S. University, Baroda)
  • Dr. Siddhesh Ghag (UM-DAE Centre of Excellence in Basic Sciences, Mumbai)

HBCSE provides rigorous training programmes and pre-departure workshops in preparation of teams for Olympiads.

India’s Performance in the International Biology Olympiad

IBO 2026 was the 26th time India has participated in the International Biology Olympiad.

In past years, India has done well with,

  • 104 participants
  • 17 Gold Medals
  • 69 Silver Medals
  • 17 Bronze Medals
  • 1 Honourable Mention

In the past ten years alone,

  • Gold medal rate: 25%
  • Silver medal rate: 68%
