India's Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment Nano-Cups for Photothermal Therapy
In a major leap forward for cancer treatment research, Indian scientists have developed a novel, simplified method to synthesize gold nano-cups with remarkable photothermal therapy (PTT) capabilities. These specially designed PEGylated semi-shells can target and destroy cancerous tumors through heat, offering a minimally invasive and highly effective alternative to traditional therapies. The innovation, driven by scientists from INST Mohali, IIT Bombay, and Tata Memorial’s ACTREC, has the potential to significantly improve survival rates in cases of metastatic breast cancer.
On June 17, 2025, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) reported that Indian researchers had published findings in the Nature group journal Communications Chemistry, showcasing a new one-step colloidal synthesis method for gold semi-shells (SS) with nano-cup morphology. This development marks a significant milestone in the application of photothermal therapy for treating advanced cancers, especially breast tumors.
