India’s First Indoor Athletics Championships Kickoff at Kalinga Stadium

India’s first-ever National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026 licked off at Kalinga Indoor Stadium, Bhubaneswar. It was Organized by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and the two-day event and will features over 278 athletes competing on a world-class 200m synthetic track. The landmark event is not just a gaming competition but also a strategic step toward hosting the World Indoor Athletics Championships 2028.

National Indoor Athletics Championships 2026 Venue

The championship is being held at the Kalinga Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar in Odisha. This stadium is the state-of-the-art facility inaugurated in 2024.

The venue has already gained global recognition after the selected to host the World Indoor Athletics Championships 2028.

The stadium features,

  • The 200m banked synthetic track
  • The 100m straight sprint track
  • Dedicated zones for field events like long jump, pole vault, and shot put
  • Also Seating capacity of around 1,700 spectators

What Makes Indoor Athletics Different?

Indoor athletics is different from traditional outdoor track events. The most notable difference are the track size and environment.

In indoor competitions,

  • Tracks are 200m long (compared to 400m outdoors)
  • Turns are banked (curved) for better speed
  • Events take place in controlled environments
  • No impact of wind or weather conditions

Popular indoor events which features,

  • 60m sprint (instead of 100m)
  • 60m hurdles
  • Middle-distance races like 800m and 1500m

Participation and Key Athletes

The inaugural event has attracted several participation from across India. Around the over 278 athletes will be competing. States like Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have sent strong contingents fot the championship.

Some notable Indian athletes competing include,

  • Animesh Kujur -National record holder (100m & 200m)
  • Mohammed Afsal – 800m national record holder
  • Praveen Chitravel – Triple jump national record holder

Events and Competition Format

The championship includes the total 11 sporting events each for men and women and will be conducted over two days. These include,

  • Track events: 60m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m
    ‘Hurdles: 60m hurdles
    ‘Field events: High jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put

Additionally some of the events are also being held for the Under-20 category.

Road to World Indoor Athletics Championships 2028

This national championship serves as a preparation platform for India’s upcoming athletics event the World Indoor Athletics Championships 2028. Also this event to be held in Bhubneshwar.

It will be historic to host the event with it,
