India’s First ‘Make in India’ Hydrogen Plant Sets a New Benchmark In This State

In a historic move towards clean energy and sustainable development, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has commissioned the country’s first ‘Make in India’ green hydrogen plant at Kandla, Gujarat. Inaugurated by Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the 1MW facility is a significant milestone in India’s journey toward maritime decarbonization and green energy adoption.

A First for Indian Ports

The plant, set up in just four months, marks the first phase of a planned 10MW green hydrogen facility. It is also the first such project at any Indian port, reflecting India’s growing commitment to sustainable and renewable energy solutions. The electrolyzer used in the project is indigenously manufactured, making the entire initiative a proud achievement under the Make in India campaign.

Green Hydrogen for Clean Mobility

Initially, the plant will supply green hydrogen to power 11 buses and street lighting within the port premises. Over time, the DPA plans to expand its use to fuel all port operations, including vehicles, tugs, and vessels. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the port’s carbon footprint, making it a model for other Indian ports to follow.

Expansion Plans: Towards a 10MW Facility

The project will expand rapidly. Another 5MW of capacity is set to be added by the end of this fiscal year, while the full 10MW facility is targeted to become operational by the middle of the next fiscal year. Once completed, the plant will be capable of producing around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

A Step Towards Maritime Decarbonization

In its statement, the Deendayal Port Authority emphasized that the project is a pivotal step in maritime decarbonization. The initiative strengthens India’s position as a global leader in sustainable port operations. Green hydrogen, known as the fuel of the future, can be used in power plants, vehicles, ships, and industrial applications, making it a versatile and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels.

Support from the Government

The project as a “new benchmark” in green energy execution, praising the DPA for demonstrating speed, scale, and skill. The foundation stone for the plant was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26, 2025, during his visit to Bhuj, signaling the government’s strong push for renewable energy innovation.
