Indira Gandhi’s 108th birth anniversary, observed on 19th November 2025, is a moment to remember the life and work of India’s first and only woman Prime Minister. Known for her bold decisions and strong leadership, she played a major role in shaping modern India. Born on November 19, 1917, she continues to inspire people even today.
Indira Gandhi was born in Allahabad to Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, and Kamala Nehru, a freedom fighter. Growing up in a political family deeply involved in the freedom movement, she learned about public service from a young age.
She studied in several schools—Modern School in Delhi, St. Cecilia’s and St. Mary’s Convent in Allahabad, schools in Switzerland, and later at Santiniketan, where Rabindranath Tagore lovingly gave her the name Priyadarshini. She also attended Oxford University but could not finish her degree.
In 1942, she married Feroze Gandhi, and the couple had two sons, Rajiv and Sanjay Gandhi.
Indira Gandhi’s political life started in the 1950s when she unofficially assisted her father, Jawaharlal Nehru. She became a member of the Congress Working Committee in 1955 and later became the party’s president in 1959.
After Nehru’s death in 1964, she joined Lal Bahadur Shastri’s cabinet as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting.
In 1966, after the sudden death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the Congress Party chose Indira Gandhi as the Prime Minister. Many politicians thought she would be weak because she was a woman, but she proved them wrong through her strong decisions.
She served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977, and again from 1980 to 1984, making her the second longest-serving Prime Minister of India after Nehru.
Indira Gandhi introduced many important policies. Her major achievements include:
In 1984, tensions grew in Punjab due to militancy inside the Golden Temple. Indira Gandhi sent the army to remove the extremists, which hurt the sentiments of many Sikhs.
On October 31, 1984, she was assassinated by two of her own bodyguards in revenge for the Golden Temple operation.
Even 108 years after her birth, Indira Gandhi is remembered as a fearless and influential leader. Her decisions, both praised and criticized, played a big role in shaping India’s political and social path.
Her life continues to be a symbol of strength, determination, and dedication to the nation.
