Industrial Output Grows 4.9% in April 2026 as India Adopts New IIP Series

Index of Industrial Production (IIP) of India has recorded the growth of 4.9% in April 2026 compared to the same month last year. As per the latest figures released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), it introduced the new IIP series with the base year 2022-23 replacing the earlier 2011-12 series.

What is the Index of Industrial Production (IIP)?

The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is one of the most important economic indicators of India and it measures the performance of industrial various sectors such as mining, manufacturing, electricity and its related activities on a monthly basis.

This index helps policymakers, investors, businesses and economists to understand the condition of the industrial economy and it assess the trends across the different sectors. After the new base year change, IIP has became more comprehensive and aligned with the changing structure of India’s economy.

India’s Industrial Production in April 2026

According to MoSPI, the overall IIP has reached to 118.9 in April 2026 compared to 113.4 in same month last year and shows the growth rate of 4.9%. The performance across the major sectors showed mixed trends. While the manufacturing sector has emerged as the primary growth driver and mining activity witnessed the contraction.

Sector wise growth in April 2026

  • Manufacturing: 6.2%
  • Water Supply, Sewerage & Waste Management: 6.6%
  • Electricity & Gas Supply: 4.9%
  • Mining & Quarrying: -5.1%

Manufacturing Emerges as the Key Growth Driver

Manufacturing which accounts the largest share in the IIP has recorded the 6.2% growth. Out of total 23 manufacturing industry groups 17 group have registered the positive growth in April 2026.

The biggest contributor in manufacturing are,

  • Manufacture of Electrical Equipment: 19.2% growth
  • Manufacture of Other Transport Equipment: 18.9% growth
  • Manufacture of Textiles: 15.6% growth
  • Manufacture of Machinery and Equipment: 12.9% growth
  • Manufacture of Motor Vehicles, Trailers and Semi-Trailers: 12.7% growth

Major Changes in the New IIP Series 2026

Earlier this year MoSPI has announced the change of Base Year from 2011-12 to 2022-23 for the comprehensive numbers. This update will ensure that the industrial production measurement reflects the present day industrial realities, technological advancements and the emerging sectors.

Key Changes

  • Base year changed from 2011-12 to 2022-23
  • Gas supply included in the coverage
  • Inclusion of the water Supply, sewerage and waste management
  • Addition of the rare earth minerals and minor minerals
  • Detailed classification of renewable and non-renewable electricity generation
  • Updated item basket with the 463 item groups (407 earlier)
  • Also expanded the product coverage from 839 items to 1,042 products

Importance of the New IIP Series

As India’s economy has undergone with the major structural changes over the past decade. There are many industries have gained importance such as technologies, renewable energy sources, advanced manufacturing products, and infrastructure services.

The revised IIP series also cover these changes by introducing the products such as the,

  • CCTV Cameras
  • Aircraft and Spacecraft Parts
  • Medical Stents
  • Vaccines
  • Advanced Textile Products

Although, obsolete products like CFL lamps, kerosene related items and the certain outdated machinery categories have been removed from the basket.
