Industrial Output Grows 4.9% in April 2026 as India Adopts New IIP Series
Index of Industrial Production (IIP) of India has recorded the growth of 4.9% in April 2026 compared to the same month last year. As per the latest figures released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), it introduced the new IIP series with the base year 2022-23 replacing the earlier 2011-12 series.
The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is one of the most important economic indicators of India and it measures the performance of industrial various sectors such as mining, manufacturing, electricity and its related activities on a monthly basis.
This index helps policymakers, investors, businesses and economists to understand the condition of the industrial economy and it assess the trends across the different sectors. After the new base year change, IIP has became more comprehensive and aligned with the changing structure of India’s economy.
According to MoSPI, the overall IIP has reached to 118.9 in April 2026 compared to 113.4 in same month last year and shows the growth rate of 4.9%. The performance across the major sectors showed mixed trends. While the manufacturing sector has emerged as the primary growth driver and mining activity witnessed the contraction.

Manufacturing which accounts the largest share in the IIP has recorded the 6.2% growth. Out of total 23 manufacturing industry groups 17 group have registered the positive growth in April 2026.

Earlier this year MoSPI has announced the change of Base Year from 2011-12 to 2022-23 for the comprehensive numbers. This update will ensure that the industrial production measurement reflects the present day industrial realities, technological advancements and the emerging sectors.
