INS Dega upgrades its Naval Airfield Security Systems

INS Dega: Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command, officially opened the Naval Airfield Integrated Security System (NAISS) and the Naval Anti-Drone System (NADS) at INS Dega in Visakhapatnam, both of which were created in India.

  • NAISS was designed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and features advanced AI technology for area security, while NADS, also developed by BEL, is an anti-drone system that can detect, track, and eliminate hostile drones near the airfield.
  • These two innovations exemplify the Indian Navy’s commitment to utilizing innovative solutions and manufacturing aligned with Make-in-India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

INS Dega: About

The Indian Navy possesses a naval air station known as INS Dega (ICAO: VOVZ) situated in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh on the eastern coast of India.

  • The Navy initiated their aviation operations in Visakhapatnam in the early 1970s with the addition of four helipads next to the civil airfield.
  • Afterwards, the civil Visakhapatnam Airport was given to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in 1981 while the air station was renamed as Naval Air Station, Visakhapatnam with new hangars, maintenance facilities, and an operations complex built.
  • Later on, on 21 October 1991, the air station’s name was changed to INS Dega by the Vice Admiral Laxminarayan Ramdas, and the name of the air station is derived from the Telugu language which means an eagle of an enormous and potent bird family.
