INS Taragiri: Key Capabilities of India’s New Stealth Frigate

The Indian Navy is set to commission the INS Taragiri on April 3 2026 at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It is marking a major step to strengthening India’s maritime security. This new stealth frigate is built under Project 17A and it highlight the India’s growing defense prowess and self-reliance. The launching event set to be attended by Defense Minister of India Rajnath Singh.

INS Taragiri: Key Details and Project 17A Overview

INS Taragiri is the fourth stealth frigate under the Project 17A program. And it is which focuses on building the modern warships with improved stealth and combat abilities.

Built by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) of Mumbai and it is showcasing India’s shipbuilding expertise.

This warship has a displacement of around 6,670 tonnes and making it a powerful asset for the Indian Navy.

Advanced Stealth Technology of Frigate

One of the biggest strength of  is its advanced stealth capability which will reduce its visibility to enemy radar systems.

With this it allows the ship to operate with greater secrecy and effectiveness.

The design also includes a sleeker structure and reduced radar cross-section and makes it harder for enemy to detect and target the ship. T

Weapons and Combat Power of Taragiri

Frigate is equipped with a strong and modern weapon system. This system it to deal with threats from multiple directions.

It can handle air, surface and underwater challenges effectively.

Key Weapons Systems

  • Supersonic surface to surface missiles for offensive operations
  • Medium range surface to air missiles for defense
  • dvanced anti-submarine warfare systems

All these systems are integrated through a Combat Management System.

Engine, Speed and Operational Capability

The ship also uses a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system and provides both speed and efficiency.

This allows it to perform for different types of missions without compromising performance.

The propulsion system ensures that the ship can operate at high speed whenever it required maintaining fuel efficiency during long patrols.

It is designed for high endurance and flexibility operations.

Make in India Boost

Strongly supports the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

With more than 75% indigenous components it shows India’s growing confidence in defense manufacturing.

More than 200 MSMEs have contributed to this project and this helping create jobs and strengthen the domestic industrial ecosystem.
