Inside the Global Terrorism Index 2026: Key Changes Explained
The Global Terrorism Index (GTI) released and the report highlights the complex global picture where terrorism remains a serious threat in modern times despite notable declines in deaths and incidents. In the year 2025 5,582 people were killed across 2,944 attacks and the report reflects a 28% drop in deaths and 22% fall in incidents compared to the previous year. The report also flags the alarming trends such as youth radicalization and border-based terrorism.
The GTI 2025 report indicates that terrorism has reduced around the world but the risk is still present and far from over. Both deaths and incidents have seen noticeable declines.

The study highlights that sub-Saharan Africa remains the most affected region by terrorism in 2025.
Particularly The Sahel Region has experienced a sharp rise over the years.
More than 50% of global terrorism deaths occurred in this region and it clearly showing a major shift from earlier years when the Middle East dominated.
