International Archives day 2024 Observed on 9th June

On the 9th of June, we commemorate International Archives Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the crucial role of records and archives in our society. The Origins of International Archives Day

The idea of establishing a specific day to honor the importance of archives emerged during the 2004 International Congress on Archives held in Vienna. Over 2,000 participants from around the world adopted a resolution, urging the United Nations to designate a day that would highlight the value of these invaluable resources.

Three years later, in 2007, the International Council on Archives (ICA) took the initiative and officially declared the 9th of June as International Archives Day. This decision was made during the ICA’s Annual General Meeting, solidifying the date as a global celebration of the preservation of our shared heritage.
