International Archives day 2024 Observed on 9th June
On the 9th of June, we commemorate International Archives Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the crucial role of records and archives in our society. These repositories of knowledge serve as the guardians of our collective memory, safeguarding the stories, events, and achievements that have shaped our past and continue to influence our present and future.
The idea of establishing a specific day to honor the importance of archives emerged during the 2004 International Congress on Archives held in Vienna. Over 2,000 participants from around the world adopted a resolution, urging the United Nations to designate a day that would highlight the value of these invaluable resources.
Three years later, in 2007, the International Council on Archives (ICA) took the initiative and officially declared the 9th of June as International Archives Day. This decision was made during the ICA’s Annual General Meeting, solidifying the date as a global celebration of the preservation of our shared heritage.
Archives play a pivotal role in various aspects of our lives. They serve as repositories of historical records, allowing us to understand and learn from the past. They also function as repositories of government records, enabling transparency, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Moreover, archives are essential for research purposes, providing valuable resources for scholars, academics, and curious minds alike. They contribute to the advancement of knowledge and the exploration of new frontiers across disciplines.
Preserving archives is not only about safeguarding the past but also about ensuring that future generations have access to the rich tapestry of our collective experiences. Long-term archival preservation and access are critical components of this endeavor, ensuring that the stories, data, and records we cherish today will continue to be available for generations to come.
On International Archives Day, various events, exhibitions, and educational initiatives are organized worldwide to raise awareness about the importance of archives. These activities aim to engage the general public, as well as private and public sectors, in recognizing the need for proper archival management and preservation.
By fostering a deeper appreciation for archives, we can cultivate a sense of shared responsibility, encouraging individuals, organizations, and governments to support and contribute to the safeguarding of our collective memory.
