International Booker Prize Renamed as Bukhman International Booker Prize with Doubled Prize Money

In 2027, the International Booker Prize will officially to be renamed as the Bukhman International Booker Prize after a decade-long funding agreement with Bukhman Philanthropies. Alongside the new name, the annual award money will also double to £100,000, making it as one of the richest international literary prizes. These changes are aims to strengthen support for translated literature and recognize the important role of authors and translators in bringing global stories to the English-speaking readers.

Why Has the International Booker Prize Been Renamed?

The Booker Prize Foundation has announced that Bukhman Philanthropies will become the title sponsor of the prize from 2027 to 2036.

This philanthropic organization has committed to funding the award for the next 10 years and with this the prize is being renamed as the Bukhman International Booker Prize.

The partnership showcases a shared commitment to promoting translated literature, cultural exchange and international storytelling.

Prize Money Doubles to £100,000

The major highlight of the announcement is the increase in the award’s prize money.

From 2027 onwards, the winner will receive £100,000 (which is approximately ₹1.28 crore).

This prize will continue to be shared equally between the author and translator, and it recognizes the translator’s essential contribution.

Each shortlisted title will continue to receive around £5,000 and it is also divided equally between the author and translator(s).

Who Are the New Sponsors?

The Booker Prize is supported by Bukhman Philanthropies, it founded by Daria Bukhman and Dmitri Bukhman.

Daria Bukhman, who has a background in linguistics and language pedagogy, he has described translated literature as an important way to show empathy and cross-cultural understanding in a technology-driven world.

Dmitri Bukhman is the co-founder of the global mobile gaming company called Playrix.

Their philanthropic foundation primarily supports maternal and neonatal health and also funding initiatives related to education, literature and culture.

Evolution of the Prize

This award has undergone several changes since its inception.

  • 2005: Launched as the Man Booker International Prize, and it is awarded every two years.
  • 2016: It was reintroduced as an annual prize for the single translated work of fiction.
  • 2019: It was renamed as the International Booker Prize after sponsorship changes.
  • 2027: It will become the Bukhman International Booker Prize under the new funding partnership.

Despite the name changes in award, this prize has consistently celebrated the finest works of translated fiction published in English.

Judging Panel for 2027 Prize

The 2027 edition will be chaired by the acclaimed novelist Katie Kitamura, whose novel was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2025.

The judging panel also includes the jury like,

  • Patrick McGuinness (writer, translator, and Oxford academic)
  • Caleb Azumah Nelson (British-Ghanaian author and filmmaker)
  • Olga Ravn (Danish novelist, poet and translator)
  • Tessa Thompson (actor and producer)

The diverse panel reflects the prize’s international outlook and its commitment to literary excellence.

Eligibility and Key Dates for 2027 Prize

Books which are eligible for the 2027 Booker Prize must,

  • Be novels or short story collections.
  • Be translated into the English language.
  • Be published in the United Kingdom or Ireland between 1 May 2026 and 30 April 2027.
