International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2026: Theme, Significance

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is annually held on 17 October in order to draw attention to the problems of poverty and social exclusion and, above all, the protection of human dignity. In 2026, the Day will be devoted to “Safe Homes for All” with regard to the larger theme of “United for Peace and Human Rights” for 2026-2028. The UN stresses that unsafe and inadequate housing adds to poverty and deprives individuals of basic needs, job opportunities, and education.

Theme of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2026

As per the United Nations, the following will be the themes for the years 2026-2028,

  • Overall Theme (2026-2028): United for Peace and Human Rights
  • Theme of 2026: Safe Homes for All

Safe homes in 2026 emphasize the connection between adequate housing, human rights and poverty eradication. As per the statistics of the UN, over 2.8 billion people across the world are facing some form of housing inadequacy. Such people have poor quality housing or are facing issues related to crowdedness, insecurity and unaffordability of their housing.

Housing is more than having a roof over one’s head. People find it difficult to access health care, education, employment, sanitation and community because of their poor-quality housing.

Three Objectives of the 2026 Observance

In terms of objectives, the 2026 observance set out three key areas of action.

1. Housing Rights to be Prioritized as Human Rights

The 2026 observance advocates for governments to regard adequate housing as an integral component of a decent standard of living. In other words, governments need to take into account issues related to housing in their policymaking, planning, and budgetary considerations.

2. Meaningful Participation of People Affected by Poverty and Housing Exclusion in Policy Formulation

People affected by poverty and housing exclusion should be able to contribute in the development, implementation, and assessment of housing policies through their experience and expertise.

3. Mobilization of Resources for Secure and Affordable Housing

Public funding and other resources should be reinforced for increased access to safe, accessible and affordable housing. Here, the objective is to address housing exclusion without excluding vulnerable groups.

History of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

The observance originated in 17 October 1987 when around 100,000 people came together in Trocadéro, Paris, France. The occasion honored the poor who had suffered from poverty, hunger and violence. It recognized that poverty was a human right abuse.

The unveiling of a memorial stone ensured that this message was kept alive. Copies of the stone have been set up across various parts of the globe including the United Nations Headquarters, New York.

In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 47/196 and officially declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The international day is observed since 1993.

Relation Between Poverty Elimination and Sustainable Development Goals

The 2026 goal regarding housing can contribute to some SDGs that have been put forth by the UN in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Sustainable Development Goals Relation
Goal 1: No Poverty Eliminate poverty in all its forms everywhere
Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities Limit inequalities both within and between countries
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities Promotes safe, resilient and the sustainable communities
Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Facilitate peace, inclusiveness and access to justice

Access to proper housing is also related to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene. They form an important part of a decent standard of living.
