History of Talk Like a Pirate Day

The holiday was created in 1995 by two friends—John Baur and Mark Summers—from Albany, Oregon, who jokingly proposed a day for everyone to speak like stereotypical pirates using exaggerated phrases, usually in a West Country English accent.
The idea was sparked during a racquetball game when one of them, reacting to an injury, exclaimed “Aaarrr!”—a classic pirate growl. The game was played on June 6, but to avoid clashing with D-Day commemorations, they chose September 19, the birthday of Summers’ ex-wife, as the official date.
What began as an inside joke turned into a global sensation when they shared their idea in 2002 with humor columnist Dave Barry, who loved it and widely promoted it.
