International Translation Day 2026: Date, History, Significance and Role of Language Professionals

International Translation Day is celebrated every year on 30th September, which acknowledges the contributions made by translators, interpreters, and other language professionals. International Translation Day was declared officially by the United Nations General Assembly in the form of Resolution 71/288 in 2017. The date is linked with the feast of Saint Jerome, who is recognized as the patron saint of translators. It celebrates the contribution of language professionals to dialogue, understanding, cooperation, development, peace and security.

History of International Translation Day

Resolution 71/288, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 24th May 2017, acknowledged the contributions of language professionals in bridging the gap between nations and promoting peace, understanding, and development. 30th September was declared as International Translation Day.

30th September was chosen because the same date marks the death anniversary of Saint Jerome, the Christian priest and scholar famous for his translations of many Biblical texts into Latin. Saint Jerome died near Bethlehem on 30th September, 420 CE.

Why is International Translation Day Observed on 30 September?

On this day the feast day of St. Jerome falls, which is observed on 30 September. He hailed from the area of northeast Italy and became famous for his proficiency in Latin, Greek and Hebrew languages.

His greatest work consisted of translating biblical texts into Latin. His version of the Latin Bible came to be known as the Vulgate. This is how St. Jerome and translation become connected with each other and that is why the UN picked this date for this international holiday.

The holiday, however, has evolved beyond literary or religious translation to encompass the work done by translators, interpreters, editors, terminology specialists, etc.

Language professionals facilitate overcoming language barriers in international communication. Their scope of work includes translation of written material, interpretation, terminology, editing and other means of multilingual communication.
