IRCTC to Allow Ticket Rescheduling Without Cancellation Charges

In a major passenger-friendly reform, Indian Railways is set to introduce a new ticket rescheduling feature through the IRCTC portal. This upcoming policy will let travellers change their travel date or train for confirmed tickets without paying cancellation fees.

Passengers will only need to pay the difference in fare, if applicable — a first-of-its-kind flexibility for Indian train passengers.

Current Ticket Cancellation Rules

Currently, IRCTC does not offer rescheduling options for confirmed tickets. Passengers must cancel their bookings and face hefty deduction fees:

  • 25% of the fare if canceled within 24 hours before departure.
  • 50% or no refund if canceled closer to departure (within 4 hours).
  • No refund at all if the passenger misses the train, even due to unavoidable reasons like delayed flights, bad weather, or emergencies.

How the New Feature Will Work

Once implemented, passengers will be able to:

  • Log in to the IRCTC website or mobile app.
  • Select their confirmed booking.
  • Choose a new travel date or train, depending on seat availability.
  • Pay only the fare difference (if any).

This system eliminates the need for cancellation, making travel more flexible and cost-efficient, particularly for frequent and long-distance travellers.

Global Comparison

Globally, such flexibility is already common:

  • Japan’s Rail Pass allows passengers to board different trains without formal rescheduling.
  • European and UK rail systems offer flexible fares that permit changes or cancellations within a set time frame.

With this initiative, Indian Railways moves closer to international standards of passenger convenience.
