IRDAI Unveils “Bima Sugam” Insurance Marketplace

India is taking a significant step toward streamlining its insurance sector with the launch of Bima Sugam, envisioned as a one‑stop digital marketplace for all kinds of insurance products — life, health, general, motor, travel, etc. The portal, overseen by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and operated by the Bima Sugam India Federation (BSIF), is being rolled out in phases, with its full transactional functions expected to be enabled by December 2025.

What Is Bima Sugam & What It Will Do

  • Unified Platform: A single digital interface where policyholders can compare, purchase, renew, manage, and claim insurance policies from various insurers.
  • Multiple Types Covered: Life, health, motor, travel, property, agricultural, and general insurance all under one roof.
  • Participants: Insurers, intermediaries, brokers, agents, banks, aggregators, and policyholders will all be connected via the platform.
  • Features & Phasing: Initially, the website serves as an information and guidance hub. Over time, more features like policy transactions, renewals, and claims will be activated as insurers integrate. Emphasis is on security, compliance, scalability.
  • Objective: To increase insurance penetration, improve transparency, reduce friction in policy servicing, and make insurance accessible to more people — aligned with the vision of “Insurance for All by 2047” and Viksit Bharat 2047.

Strategic Significance

  • Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI): Bima Sugam is a key component of India’s DPI efforts — a foundational platform serving all stakeholders in insurance.
  • Access & Penetration: It promises to enhance accessibility especially for rural and underserved populations, lowering entry barriers like paperwork and multiple intermediations.
  • Transparency & Trust: By enabling comparison, clear policy information, and more direct interaction, the platform aims to improve consumer trust.
  • Reduced Costs: Streamlining functions like renewal, claim settlement, and policy management can reduce costs both for users and insurers.
  • Regulatory Push: Aligns with regulatory goals of standardisation, better service, and accountability in the insurance sector.
