ISRO to Conduct First Gaganyaan Test Flight in December 2025, Confirms Chairman

India is steadily advancing toward its historic goal of launching its first human spaceflight mission – Gaganyaan. In a significant announcement, ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan confirmed that the first test flight of Gaganyaan will take place in December 2025. With over 80% of critical tests already completed, this mission represents a bold leap in India’s journey into human space exploration, aligning with its growing global space ambitions.

Test Progress and Timeline

According to ISRO’s update, out of the total 9,000 tests required for Gaganyaan’s success,

  • 7,700 tests (80%) have been completed
  • The remaining 2,300 tests will be concluded by March 2026
  • The first unmanned test flight in December 2025 will validate key systems including the crew escape system, orbital module, and launch dynamics, laying the groundwork for the future manned mission.

To send three Indian astronauts into low earth orbit (LEO)

  • Mission duration: Up to 7 days in space
  • Launch vehicle: Human-rated GSLV Mk III (LVM-3)
