India observes Janjatiya Gaurav Divas every year on November 15 to honour the contributions of tribal freedom fighters, especially Bhagwan Birsa Munda, whose legacy continues to inspire generations. Birsa Munda (1875–1900), revered as “Dharti Aaba” (Father of the Land), was a legendary tribal leader, social reformer, and freedom fighter from the Munda tribe of Jharkhand.
Born in Ulihatu village on the Chota Nagpur Plateau, Birsa was educated at a German missionary school. However, the spread of Christianity, loss of tribal lands due to British forest laws, and the exploitative Zamindari system ignited his resolve to resist.
